Week of April 16

Topic for week of April 16, 2012:
Use of Flow Maps – Flow maps assist students with understanding sequencing.  How have you used a flow map to show sequencing in your teaching this week?  What was the main topic/event  Did you use a vertical or a horizontal flow map?  Did you use sub–stages under or next to your major stages?  Did the student's Frame of Reference help guide the map?

Going a bit further – Teach using a flow map backwards to see if students can figure out the main event/topic.

  1. Hi, EHS Business Ed. Department! I just finished reading your ideas for using the Brace Map in your instruction, and I am so impressed! You're right, Nate, this is a really great Map for helping students visualize the "whole to part" relationship. I can't wait to see your ideas for incorporating the Flow Map!

  2. This week we used the flow map in accounting classes. We are working on a practice set which covers all ten steps of the accounting cycle. The students identified all the steps, and then were able to tell me the tasks that must be completed for each step. The flow map was really long--but was a good way to show the correct order and intricate parts of the accounting cycle.

  3. This week we used the horizontal flow map in Computer Apps to go through the steps of how to Split a worksheet window in Excel. The students answered a Journal Prompt of why they might need to split the worksheet window and then we completed the flow map on how to split it. I used the sub-stages at the beginning because there are 3 different ways that a worksheet can be split.

  4. This week, we used a flow map in my Java Honors class. We walked through how to evaluate Extended Assignment Operators to show an equal expression. I used the flow map at the end of class as a means of assesment via class discussion. This worked well because it reviewed how to lay each part of the evaluation out.
